Good luck to our former trainees nominated in the annual British Press Awards on Tuesday. Guy Basnett, News of The World who and Andrew Gregory, The Daily Mirror, are up for the Young Journalist award along with Jon Swaine, Daily Telegraph. Fiona Cummins and Sarah Tetteh, both Daily Mirror, are nominated for the Showbiz Reporter of the Year award. Walter Greenwood, former co-editor of Essential Law for Journalists, is to receive a lifetime achievement award at the same event. Walter still marks law papers for us in Newcastle.
Hull Daily Mail reporter Claudia Tanner has persuaded Bridlington Magistrates Court to lift an order so she could identify a 15-year-old boy convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to a boy by pushing him off the sea wall in Bridlington. Claudia, who was on our Newcastle foundation course in 2008, argued the order, under Section 39 of the Children and Young Persons Act, should be lifted, citing the principle of open justice with case law to back it up.
